Kriegsspiel: Big Trouble In Little Lardas
quinta-feira, 23 de maio de 2019
Two weeks ago, I participated in a week-long online Kriegsspiel run by Nick Skinner and Richard Clarke of Too Fat Lardies fame. With a total of 13 participants, two umpires and one observer, it was quite an undertaking. Set within a fictional "Imaginations" campaign of the "Lard War II," the players commanded either the forces of the Kingdom of Blue or the Red Republic. As Nick explained in the game:
Blue has invaded Red and achieved a breakthrough in the central South. Blue's armies are now pushing Northwards towards the crucial line of the NEMUNAS river and the strategically important city of LARDAS that stands at the confluence of two rivers. If they can push on, they will be threatening the capital city of REDBURG. Red forces though are well organised and aware of the danger. What will happen next?
The Blue forces, of which I was a member, consisted of an airborne division. We had as players the commanding general, chief of staff, two para brigade commanders, a special reconnaissance squadron commander, a divisional artillery battalion commander and me. I was assigned as the commander of a brigade of glider troops.
| Speaking of gliders. This film and the real events it represents may have provided may have provided some inspiration. |
Early in the plans process, I chose to land my initial assault gliders directly on the forts. I figured my best chance was to take the enemy completely by surprise and jump right on top, like at Eben Emael. I had limited resources to get my brigade on the ground. It would take three lifts over the course of two days to get my complete brigade into the battle area. Given my resources at hand, on the initial landings, I would have 20 platoons out of 48 on the ground. Not great odds, I thought. But I had to risk it. Who dares, wins, right?
Plans were set, then changed and changed again as the brigade commanders weighed options and made their cases with the CG and COS for why they should get resources. A feature of Discord that we found handy are voice chat rooms where members can talk via VOIP for planning, rock drills, etc. Blue had two conferences and we found them very beneficial. By the time we had our first conference, we had our plan largely in place and were discussing some of the finer points. The final conference was to make sure everybody had their plans finalized and ask final questions.
The day of battle arrived. As time drew closer for us to climb in our imaginary planes and gliders, top level rooms were locked up and player-to-player communications stopped. We sat at our computers waiting for H-Hour. I received a message that I was on the ground at LZ Baker and could see paras taking heavy fire about a kilometer to the northeast. I could also see and here vicious combat in Fort 2, aka OBJ Grumpy. Then the various communication nets started going live in the form of restricted chat rooms in Discord.
My brigade net room was where I spoke with umpires to get reports from my battalions and request info from them. There was an "on the ground" room for commanders that were up on the division net. Finally there was a division HQ room for those who had established comms with the outside world. Receiving information, parsing it, confirming our own assumptions and then assessing it before putting it up in both the "on the ground" room and Division room was a significant challenge. Luckily, the game was set to last only three hours.
During the game, we were mostly interacting with the umpires and relying on them for information. Issuing orders and requests for information from my imaginary subordinates. I then had to process that info and relay it to my in-game superiors. But only once our in-game communication nets were established! One of the para commanders didn't have comms because his radios got shot up on the DZ. He had to "walk" to where I was and then we could talk to each other and the had to use my "radios" to talk to higher.
Fort 1, OBJ Bashful was taken almost immediately with 30% casualties. Fort 2, OBJ Grumpy, fell only after receiving help from a platoon that had landed on Bashful. Fort 3, OBJ Dopey, was a see-saw battle and I tried mustering forces from Bashful and Grumpy to push it over the edge. Fort 4, OBJ Sleepy, only reported in once their ammo was all expended and the last holdouts were cornered in a bunker and calling "God save the King."
Enemy armored infantry and self-propelled guns had been spotted in the vicinity of Sleepy, so I called for air strikes on the fort with machine gun and cannon only, then follow up with bombs and rockets on the enemy vehicles. Imagine my surprise when I received the report that Sleepy had been destroyed from the air.
In the meantime, I was still trying to get enough forces scratched together to make a difference at Dopey to find it had fallen and was being evacuated, my troops being led away by the enemy. When I asked for clarification if it was Sleepy or Dopey, i was told, "No, it's Dopey, dopey!" Thanks, Rich.
Then the game ended. Luckily, our troops were wholly imaginary and our decisions didn't result in any real casualties. It was an exhilarating, exhausting, madcap, sobering, nervous, mind-blowing experience. I'm planning a podcast with Nick, Richard and the two force commanders. Stay tuned.
I will definitely be looking to do one of these for my J3 group and possibly for my fellow OCS instructors in the near future. Stay tuned for that, as well.

Geoff
Interviewed on: 1/11/2019
This week we get to meet Geoff Graham, who runs Cheese Viking Games. Geoff not only designs games, but he also does reviews and Kickstarter previews on his blog and does digital game runthroughs on his twitch channel. Read on to learn more about Geoff and his projects.
Some Basics
Tell me a bit about yourself.
How long have you been designing tabletop games?
Two to five years.
Why did you start designing tabletop games?
Games are fun, it's very interesting to me to create a system that is engaging and provides fun and joyful moments. Plus, there's always that voice in the back of your head that goes off when you play a game that doesn't quite work. "this was neat, but I bet I could improve it or do something better..."
What game or games are you currently working on?
I have a few games in the early planning stages. One is an area control/majority game based on powering neighborhoods in different cities. I had a baking show competition theme that got stuck in prototype, and then was stolen with some other prototypes in a backpack from my car in early 2017. It was hard to come back from something like that and I took a long design break.
Have you designed any games that have been published?
No
What is your day job?
Director of Marketing and Sales
Your Gaming Tastes
My readers would like to know more about you as a gamer.
Where do you prefer to play games?
I like to play physical games at a home, either mine or a friend's. I stream digital tabletop games on twitch. www.twitch.tv/cheesevikinggames
Who do you normally game with?
Family and friends. Solo or against AI for digital games
If you were to invite a few friends together for game night tonight, what games would you play?
Spiel Des Jahres or Kennerspiel winners hit the sweet spot for me. Something 60-90 minutes with easy rules and enough time to form an act out a strategy. A little luck is good for games, but not too lucky.
And what snacks would you eat?
Chips, pretzels, cheeseballs.
Do you like to have music playing while you play games? If so, what kind?
Haven't tried playing with music.
What's your favorite FLGS?
Before moving, I enjoyed going to 8th Dimension Games for International Tabletop Day
What is your current favorite game? Least favorite that you still enjoy? Worst game you ever played?
Hare and Tortoise (SDJ winner) and Fearsome Floors are tied for my favorite. Viticulture never stuck with me but the family really likes it so I enjoy it in that aspect. I found Tsuro to be pretty pointless but the worst game I've played is Munchkin. Just not my type of game!
What is your favorite game mechanic? How about your least favorite?
I really enjoy most mechanics if they make sense in the game. Drafting, Area Control/Majority. I hate memory or hidden but trackable information because I am bad at remembering them! Worker Placement games typically fall flat for me, even though it is an abstract form of action drafting.
What's your favorite game that you just can't ever seem to get to the table?
Witch's Brew
What styles of games do you play?
I like to play Board Games, Card Games, Video Games
Do you design different styles of games than what you play?
I like to design Board Games, Card Games
OK, here's a pretty polarizing game. Do you like and play Cards Against Humanity?
It's fine for a few rounds but there are way better games spend time on.
You as a Designer
OK, now the bit that sets you apart from the typical gamer. Let's find out about you as a game designer.
When you design games, do you come up with a theme first and build the mechanics around that? Or do you come up with mechanics and then add a theme? Or something else?
I usually focus on mechanics first and then add a theme on top.
Have you ever entered or won a game design competition?
I entered a board game geek solo design contest
Do you have a current favorite game designer or idol?
Alan R Moon tends to make games I really enjoy. Incan Gold!
Where or when or how do you get your inspiration or come up with your best ideas?
During my commute home from work
How do you go about playtesting your games?
Generally I try to play as all the players first before introducing the game to friends and family. I have not had a game progress to blind playtesters yet.
Do you like to work alone or as part of a team? Co-designers, artists, etc.?
Collaboration is always nice, it's great to bounce ideas off of more talented people, but my games always start as a solo project until I get stuck. I enjoy bouncing ideas off hot shot new designer and game developer Mike Mihealsick of Coalition Game Studios.
What do you feel is your biggest challenge as a game designer?
Confidence in the prototype
If you could design a game within any IP, what would it be?
Star Wars
What do you wish someone had told you a long time ago about designing games?
Don't be afraid, test, test, test
What advice would you like to share about designing games?
Do it for fun
Would you like to tell my readers what games you're working on and how far along they are?
Games that are in the early stages of development and beta testing are: 2
And games that are still in the very early idea phase are: 4
And the oddly personal, but harmless stuff…
OK, enough of the game stuff, let's find out what really makes you tick! These are the questions that I'm sure are on everyone's minds!
Star Trek or Star Wars? Coke or Pepsi? VHS or Betamax?
Star Wars, Coke, VHS
What hobbies do you have besides tabletop games?
Streaming tabletop and video games, pinball
What is something you learned in the last week?
Pizza math.
Favorite type of music? Books? Movies?
Video Game music, High Fantasy, Offbeat comedies like What We Do In The Shadows
What was the last book you read?
Probably a book about Marketing strategies. Boring.
Do you play any musical instruments?
Not anymore, I played clarinet and bass clarinet once upon a time.
Who is your idol?
My dad. RIP.
What would you do if you had a time machine?
Know things. Charge people to know things.
Are you an extrovert or introvert?
Introvert
If you could be any superhero, which one would you be?
Too many choices! Someone who could keep a low profile or turn invisible.
Have any pets?
Not anymore
When the next asteroid hits Earth, causing the Yellowstone caldera to explode, California to fall into the ocean, the sea levels to rise, and the next ice age to set in, what current games or other pastimes do you think (or hope) will survive into the next era of human civilization? What do you hope is underneath that asteroid to be wiped out of the human consciousness forever?
Chess is timeless, let's wipe out "party games" :)
If you'd like to send a shout out to anyone, anyone at all, here's your chance (I can't guarantee they'll read this though):

A $30 Game In A $50 Box
It's always especially disappointing to me when a great (or even a merely adequate) game is let down by sub-standard production values. You could argue that it shouldn't matter that much, as long as the playing pieces work your imagination can do the rest, and that may have been true in the '70s and '80s with games like Dune or Aliens that have some great game play but fall short on component quality.
In the current board game renaissance, however, the bar has been significantly raised, so much so that a game that doesn't look good is at best embarrassing, and at worst difficult to find players for. The Expanse Board Game, published by Wizkids and based on the television and book series, is such a game.
The game itself is fairly good. Players control the planetary governments that hover in the background of the TV series, manipulating events in order to control the solar system. The core of the game is a row of action cards which are purchased by players using their victory points, and then used either for their printed game effect, or spent for more general actions such as moving fleets around the board. There are several scoring cards shuffled into various points of the deck, and when one of these comes up, players score points based on the number of planets and moons they control, with ties broken by the strength of a player's fleet.
It's a fairly basic area control game, with two important elements that make it feel like the TV show it's based on. One is that each player has a series of tech cards that are earned at various points throughout the game, which serve to escalate the conflict between the planets; early in the game there is an uneasy truce in which players are not allowed to openly attack each other, but this quickly escalates into open warfare, much as it does over the course of the show.
The other interesting game element is the Rocinante, the misfit ship whose crew are the main characters of the show. In the game, James Holden and his crew change their alliance from turn to turn, with control of them going to whichever player is in last place. I particularly like this touch, as it reflects their shifting alliances and also their tendency throughout the series to support the underdog.
The aforementioned poor components -- mainly muddy images on the cards, a bland board that is sometimes difficult to read, and too-small cardboard counters to represent each player's mighty warships -- stop just short of actually being distracting, and might be acceptable if the game's asking price were a little lower.
On the other hand, maybe that's appropriate for a game that takes place in the Belt, where resources are scarce and everything is more expensive than it should be.
Rating: 3 (out of 5) A decent game that would probably rate higher if either the production quality were better, or the price point were lower.

Uncertainty
There are other disturbing feelings that can be strategically used in the process of game design. Today I would like to talk about uncertainty in games.
In this context, I ought to mention the book Uncertainty in games (2013), written by Greg Costikyan—the man behind classic games like Paranoia and Toon RPGs.
Costikyan (2013, p.16) argues that in real-life situations—like when we're shopping online, electing a congressman or using software for work—we want no uncertainty, "we prefer simplicity, surety, and consistency." While we always look forward to eliminating uncertainty when it concerns quotidian situations, products, and services, when it comes to games "a degree of uncertainty is essential" (COSTIKYAN, 2013, p.16), for it is a key factor in creating an immersive and entertaining experience for players.

How would you imagine a version of Dark Souls where enemies could be killed by a single weak blow from your shitty level-one weapon? Would you like to play a Super Mario Bros. game that lacks deadly cliffs and requires jumping just to collect coins?
Costikyan (2013, p.17-71) analyzes different kinds of games and explains that sometimes uncertainty comes from programmed random results; other times, uncertainty lies within opponents and how they perform; ultimately, uncertainty may result from the player's own abilities in the game.
I strongly recommend the book cited herein, and I would like to invite you to analyze ten of your favorite games (digital or analogic) in the light of this post. Try to figure out what kind of features caught your attention in those games—uncertainty was probably one of them.
